I wrote this because I suddenly remembered the meaning of my name. In my opinion, a name is not just a name. Each person’s name has it’s own meaning, there is hope given, there is prayer included. Sometimes I’m sad and angry if someone makes fun of someone else’s name (or even changes someone else’s name at will). It’s also sad when my friends said that they doesn’t like their own name because they feels ugly/awful :(
Even though our parents definitely choose names for us with great consideration. They try to find references by reading the various meanings of each name. They choose names by entering their life history. They give names while praying that their child’s life will match with the meaning of their name.
A little story, my parents have passed away. When I have to continue my life, it feels very difficult and heavy. I lost my life’s purpose. When they were no longer here, I tried to find my new main purpose in this life. Until finally I know the meaning of my name, “Shine brightly because God is with us”. At that time I began to realize that my name was a memory and hope from my parents that would always be there for the rest of my life. My parents must have chosen my name with great consideration, perhaps also while praying to God so that I could live up to the meaning of my name. Since then, my life goal has been to live up to the meaning of my name. My name is proof of my parents’ hopes and prayers to God. So I try to continue to “shine” wherever and whenever because God will always there for me. When I introduce myself to others by tell them my name, I always say it proudly because I remember the meaning of my name. I am very happy when other people have perspective about me that match with my name, because it is proof that I am on the right path all along. Tbh, I never thought that the meaning of my name would have such a big influence on my life..
Besides, I really like knowing the meaning of other people’s names. I will ask other people, “what does your name mean?” and they will explain enthusiastically. When they were explaining, without realizing it, I also prayed for them so that God would help them achieve the meaning of their name.
Here are some examples of unique name meanings:
Example 1: My friend’s name is INDIRA. She explained to me that Indira was a combination of her parents’ names, “Indra” and “Ira”.
Example 2: My friend’s name is DWI. Dwi means second child (in Indonesian) because he is the second child.
Example 3: My friend has three older siblings. Their names are in alphabetical order based on their birth order. First child A = Adit, second child, B = Bisma, third child C = Cinta, fourth child D = Dio. Their parents explained that this was to make it easier for other people to know the order of their children.
The conclusion is that our names have a valuable meaning (especially for our parents), so let’s be proud of our own names and live up to the meaning of our names. Cheers!
How about tell me the meaning of your name? :)
